The “Friends of the Cemetery” donation program is designed to allow families, friends, and organizations to memorialize the selfless service our veterans and their families have provided to our country through the beautification of the cemetery grounds. The Avenue of Flags at the west entrance drive of the cemetery is just one example of a privately funded project. Others include the Iowa's Fallen Heroes Monument, glass enclosure of the committal shelter, the five service flagpoles encircling the shelter plaza, the bronze plaque at the shelter, and the majestic bronze eagle at the columbaria plaza. Corporate donors and hundreds of individual donors assisted with the funding of the Interstate 80 wall project. It is depicted below in an artist's rendering. Donors receive a letter acknowledging their deductible donation. A donor box is located in the vestibule of the Administration Building.
The contributions were initially received in 2004 through the sale of the Bronze and Silver Iowa Veteran Commemorative Medals. This program was very successful. This money was earmarked for beautification projects like the I-80 wall project. These medals are still available for sale and proceeds will fund continuing beautification efforts. The medals are a great remembrance and serve as a wonderful gift for Christmas, birthdays, Father's and Mother's Day, Veterans Day, and any special occasion.
You are invited to support the Iowa Veterans Cemetery by purchasing a Commemorative Medal.
