Floral Regulations

To assist cemetery staff in maintaining the appearance and dignity of the grounds, we ask that visitors follow our posted floral regulations.

Fresh Cut Flowers: Floral arrangements accompanying the casket or urn at the time of the burial will be placed on the grave after interment. Floral tributes will be removed when they become withered, faded or unsightly. Fresh cut flowers are permitted at any time.

Artificial Flowers: During colder weather, artificial flowers will be permitted October through March.

Memorial Day Flower Policy: Artificial flowers may be placed at the site of the interment one week prior and one week following Memorial Day. IVC staff will remove all artificial flowers on the Monday following Memorial Day.

Vases: All flowers must be displayed in vases provided by the cemetery.

Headstones: Tributes of any kind may not be secured to headstones.

Columbaria Walls: Tributes are permitted at the base of a wall.

Unauthorized Decorations: Statues, vigil lights, breakable objects, pinwheels, balloons, memorabilia, commemorative objects, and items considered to be inconsistent with the dignity of the cemetery will be immediately removed.

Plantings: Permanent plants are not permitted on graves or at the columbaria walls.

Special Occasions: Contact the cemetery office for allowable grave decorations during holidays.

Cemetery Regulations

On behalf of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, we welcome all visitors to the hallowed grounds of the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. The cemetery is dedicated to the men and women who answered our nation’s call at home and around the world.

To preserve the dignity, beauty and serenity of the grounds, visitors are asked to observe our posted restrictions. The following activities are prohibited on cemetery grounds:

  • Smoking and the use of any other tobacco products
  • Any form of sports or recreation, to include, jogging, bicycling, skating and picnicking
  • Public gatherings of a partisan nature or boisterous actions
  • Cutting, breaking or damaging trees, shrubs, grass or other plantings
  • Allowing pets to run loose
  • Littering the grounds
  • Operating vehicles off of paved road surfaces
  • Playing loud music in vehicles
